This peace we seek is more than tranquillity,
It reaches further than a pause in hostilities,
An interruption to the gunshots.
It is not merely respite from the wounding,
Born from hate and needless violence -
It is not just a retreating army.
It is not in heaven, the life we seek;
It is not serenity, nor perfection -
It is less, perhaps more.
But it's not a rainbow, not a dove,
Not a grand symbolic gesture.
It is two human hands reaching out
Across darkness and division,
Two mortal hands touching one another,
Skin on skin, flesh to flesh,
Grasping in reconciliation.
